Scouting The Defense

Cincinnati’s defense has been up and down so far this year. Going up against a Kansas City offense that has been putting up points at an insane rate has to make Bengals fans worried. It is not impossible to beat the Chiefs as long as you can keep up.

After this past Sunday against the Steelers, it may be hard for the Bengals to slow down the Chiefs offense enough to pull out the win. Divisional matches are always a physical affair, and this past weekend was no different for the Bengals. They had key injuries at multiple positions, but the biggest ones were to starting corner Darqueze Dennard, linebacker Nick Vigil, and safety Shawn Williams.

Vigil has already been ruled out for the next month with a sprained MCL. Dennard injured his shoulder and was seen with a sling on during the game. Williams suffered a concussion and is currently in the league concussion protocol. William Jackson, Dre Kirkpatrick, and Carlos Dunlap also all left the game at different points to deal with either lingering injuries, or some that were suffered during the game.

Having a banged up team is never an ideal situation. Especially for a defense that is ranked 29th in total yards allowed per game, 28th in passing yards, 23rd in points allowed, and 20th in rushing yards allowed. going against the Chiefs offense has to be giving Marvin Lewis and the defensive coaching staff nightmares.

This Sunday will be similar to last Sunday against the Patriots for the Chiefs. There will be a lot of scoring and things will be exciting. It will also be interesting to see how Mahomes will respond after his first loss in the NFL. Dalton has had troubles winning under the lights over the years sporting a meager 5-14 record in prime time.

These struggles could come back to haunt him this Sunday night. If they do it could end up being a major boon for the Chiefs as this game could also end up having repercussions later on when it comes to playoff seeding if the Bengals continue to lead the AFC North.
