The Kansas City Chiefs have added Leon McQuay back to the practice squad after substituting him for tight end David Wells.

The Kansas City Chiefs have welcomed back defensive back Leon McQuay to the team’s practice squad after a few days spent in free agency.

Two weeks ago, the Chiefs signed tight end David Wells and released cornerback Arrion Springs from the practice squad in order to make the switch. Then late last week, the Chiefs added tight end Deon Yelder and dropped McQuay in the process.

On Monday night, the Chiefs decided they’d seen enough of Wells for now and brought back McQuay, leaving Yelder, a product from Western Kentucky, as the lone tight end on the practice squad. Springs has been signed by the New Orleans Saints and, most recently, the Cleveland Browns since his release from the Chiefs.

McQuay is now back in the fold as a versatile defensive back who can step in for the Chiefs if needed at either safety position as well as any inside corner slots. The team’s former sixth round pick failed to stand out in the preseason enough to make the final roster, which means his ceiling is likely nothing exciting. However he is a known quantity who is quite familiar with Bob Sutton’s defense, his teammates and the team’s culture at Arrowhead.

Just because McQuay is back doesn’t mean that he’s safe on the practice squad. Expect Brett Veach to continue to check out intriguing players who could fit the Chiefs schemes or adjust to the number of injuries weathered by the team right now, especially at pass rusher.
