The Kansas City Chiefs let go of a popular cornerback prospect in Arrion Springs on Tuesday in order to sign tight end David Wells.

The Kansas City Chiefs disappointed a number of hardcore fans on Tuesday evening with the announcement that they had released former Oregon State cornerback Arrion Springs from the practice squad. In his place, they have signed former San Diego State tight end David Wells.

The Chiefs had kicked the tires on former Oakland Raiders tight end Clive Walford earlier this week, and the signing of Wells signals their desire to add more talent to the position. Is there a further move coming on the active roster? That much is yet unknown.

As for Springs, he signed with the Chiefs as a rookie free agent and lasted until final roster cuts were announced. He then signed to the practice squad. While he was a fan favorite as a sleeper prospect, the reality is that he failed to make a team that has been paper thin at cornerback and even made a last second trade for Charvarius Ward. Even more the fact that he’s been let go from the practice squad means there’s a definite disconnect in how fans and coaches view Springs.

As for Wells, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an rookie free agent immediately after the NFL Draft. A 6’6, 255 lb. prospect, Wells certainly wasn’t a major target for the Aztecs at any point in his career with only 9 total receptions during his senior year in 12 games, although 2 of those went for touchdowns. That said, he was a key blocker for Rashaad Penny, the nation’s leading rusher.
