Scouting the Offense

When you think of Jacksonville, the offense is normally the last thing that you think of. Blake Bortles is viewed as one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL, after a rough beginning to his career. Even with the criticism, the Jaguars were able to get one step away from the super bowl last season before losing to the New England Patriots in Foxborough. This season Bortles has lead the Jaguars to a 3-1 start to begin the season.

This has been without some of his top playmakers on offense as well. After the departure of both Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson this offseason Jacksonville was looking to former second-round pick Marqise Lee to lead the wide receiver corps. Unfortunately for the Jaguars Lee took a nasty hit to his knee during the preseason and was put on injured reserve after receiving surgery.

The wide receiver position isn’t devoid of talent without Lee. The Jaguars brought in Donte Moncrief and drafted DJ Chark to help offset the loss of Hurns and Robinson. Couple that with last years undrafted free agent Keelan Cole and fourth-round pick DeDe Westbrook and Jacksonville has a young core of wide receivers for Bortles to grow with going forward.

The Jaguars also added a key player to their offensive line in free agency this past offseason. Andrew Norwell formerly of the Carolina Panthers signed a $66.5MM deal with $30MM guaranteed. Jacksonville was doing their best to set this offense up for success around Bortles this offseason. Unfourtantly for the Jaguars their left tackle Cam Robinson tore his ACL while playing against the New England Patriots. This is a big blow to an otherwise solid offensive line. Robinson has been replaced by Josh Wells for the season and is rated with a 63.6 grade by Pro Football Focus so far this season.

Lee and Robinson are not the only players the Jaguars will be missing this Sunday. Leonard Fournette has been dealing with a hamstring issue since the first game of the season. He attempted to return to action this past Sunday but was unable to make it through the game. Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone has been quoted saying that he does not have a timetable for Fournette’s return.

In Fournette’s place, the Jaguars have been relying on T.J. Yeldon. Yeldon has had very little success so far this season having rushed for only one touchdown and 205 yards. The Jaguars are going to be missing the tough and physical play of Fournette as the year continues into the winter months.
