Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre had nothing but positive things to say about Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes after a great start to his 2018 season.

NFL fans in and outside of Kansas City are still buzzing about Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes after he threw six touchdown passes against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Sunday’s 42-37 win. It was the 47th time an NFL quarterback threw for six touchdowns in a single game, according to Bruce Murray on Sirius XM NFL Radio.

This put Mahomes with 10 touchdown passes in the first two weeks, leading the league. His 10 touchdowns in the first two games of a season is an NFL record, just beating out Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Charley Johnson, who all held the record with nine in the first two weeks.

Former Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre, who Mahomes received plenty of comparisons to entering the 2017 NFL draft, weighed in on Mahomes’ early success Tuesday morning on Sirius XM NFL Radio.

While Mahomes’ NFL record-breaking 10 touchdown passes in two games is a big accomplishment, Favre was more impressed by Mahomes’ ability to take care of the football and not throw an interception in 55 pass attempts through two games.

“What he’s done from a touchdown standpoint, it’s as good as anyone has ever done,” Favre said. “That in itself is very impressive. But I think when you take care of the ball as well as he has, or guys like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers do week in and week out, when you are virtually flawless and productive at the same time, you should consider yourself in rarefied air. That is what he’s done here these first two weeks.”

A case could be made that with additional game film on Mahomes, defenses will eventually figure him out and find ways to stop him or slow him down. But Favre believes Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who was Favre’s assistant coach for seven seasons in Green Bay, will always put Mahomes in position to consistently play at a high level throughout his career.

“He’s going to call plays that is going to work for Patrick Mahomes and his offense,” Favre said of his former assistant coach. “You call or design plays for an offense or defense, based on the strengths and weaknesses of your group.

“Andy’s going to put him in the best position to succeed based on his strengths and weaknesses and the guys around him. Coordinators, when they go in and play Kansas City, they’re not just stopping Mahomes. There’s an entire cast that’s pretty doggone good. I think Mahomes’ talent is as good as anybody in the league now and has ever played the game. He’s going to pose problems to coordinators that I’m not going to say that they haven’t faced before, but the [coordinators] are creatures of habit. You call your stuff and you expect the guys to execute it to the best of their abilities.”

Although Favre had an illustrious 16-year career with the Green Bay Packers, Mahomes did something that Favre could never do while playing for the Packers, which was throw six touchdown passes in one game.

“Mahomes has done something that took me 18 years to do,” Favre said.

In Week 4 of the 2008 season, Favre led the New York Jets to a 56-35 win over the Arizona Cardinals, quarterbacked at the time by Kurt Warner. For the first and only time of his career, Favre threw for six touchdown passes to help the Jets pick up their second win of the season that year.

As longtime sports fans know, even some of the best athletes struggle or have a bad stretch occasionally. Favre said Mahomes’ career won’t be any different. But he believes that this is just the start of a great football career.

“I think the kid will get nothing but better. Now does that mean he’s going to throw eight touchdowns next week? More than likely not. There will be some downtime. He started so good he can only go down. And I don’t mean that in a negative way. But you just can’t mass-produce like that week in and week out, I don’t think. But that’s not a knock against him at all. I think he’s played outstanding, and he was drafted in the first round for a reason. They traded up for him because they thought enough of him, and I think he’s just proving they made the right decision.”
