While a lot of the focus is on Patrick Mahomes’ 10 touchdown passes in the first two games, the Chiefs offense has improved in one key area.

Patrick Mahomes is dominating headlines after he threw for a franchise single-game tying high six touchdown passes against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Sunday’s 42-37 win to help the team improve to 2-0. Mahomes’ 10 touchdown passes in the first two games is an NFL record, surpassing Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Charley Johnson, all who threw for nine touchdown passes in the first two games of an NFL season.

Kansas City’s offense is the highest scoring in the league right now. A big part of that is due to the improvement of the offense in the red zone.

The Chiefs struggled in the red zone in 2017, scoring touchdowns on just 45 percent of their red zone outings. The Chiefs ranked 29th in that category.

With Mahomes under center, the Chiefs have been perfect in all six of their red zone trips in 2018. The Chiefs were two-for-two in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers and succeeded in all four of their red zone visits on Sunday against the Steelers.

In all six of the red zone trips the Chiefs have scored on, Mahomes threw touchdown passes to  De’Anthony Thomas, Tyreek Hill, Chris Conley, Travis Kelce, Kareem Hunt and Demarcus Robinson.

Despite being on the road in back-to-back games to open up the 2018 season, Kansas City’s red zone offense has not only been perfect, but all 10 of the team’s offensive touchdowns have come through the air. Eventually, Kansas City will score some rushing touchdowns. Although the Chiefs have the reigning rushing yards leader in Hunt, opposing defenses have to be ready for their versatile offense.

The Chiefs offense could not have gotten off to a better start. With a record-breaking first two weeks for Mahomes and the highest scoring offense in the league, the Chiefs look to continue that success in their home opener this Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.
