If you want to know just how Patrick Mahomes is faring early in his career as a starter, the AFC named him the Offensive Player of the Week.
One thing is clear: Patrick Mahomes is off to a fine start as the starting quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The NFL rewarded Mahomes’s dazzling effort on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers by naming him the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Mahomes and the Chiefs marched into Stubhub Stadium and put up a strong offensive display in the 38-28 road win over the Chargers in what was an important divisional win to start the season for K.C. Andy Reid’s offensive script looked great throughout the game that included several new wrinkles for Mahomes to put into motion. The end result was 169 receiving yards for Tyreek Hill and a captivating performance from Mahomes himself.
Mahomes finished 15 of 24 on the day for 256 passing yards andn 4 touchdown tosses, although two of those were fairly simple pitches behind the line of scrimmage easily ran in at the goal line by both Tyreek Hill and De’Anthony Thomas. Still those simple throws were easily outweighed by one incredible downfield toss after another—from the bullets sent toward Sammy Watkins and Hill to a perfect arc to Anthony Sherman (yep, the fullback) on a wheel route for another long score. Mahomes finished the day with a 127.5 passer rating.
Mahomes now faces another stiff road test against the Pittsburgh Steelers before returning to Arrowhead for his first start ever at Arrowhead Stadium. Mahomes is now 2-0 as a starter given that he also won at Mile High in Denver in Week 17 of last season for the Chiefs.
