The first week of the NFL’s regular season is now over and we’ve already seen some surprises, so let’s take a look at the league standings.
The first week of the NFL is in the books and we’ve already seem some surprises. Some of these surprises include the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers’ game ending in a tie, Ryan Fitzpatrick leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a victory over the New Orleans Saints, and the New York Jets scoring 48 against the Detroit Lions in Sam Darnold’s first start.
Starting with the AFC, let’s look at what the league standings look like after the first week.
AFC East
Dolphins 1-0-0
On Sunday, the Dolphins beat the record for longest game in NFL history with a game that lasted a whopping 7 hours and 10 minutes due to multiple weather delays. Despite the delays, Ryan Tannehill led the Dolphins to a 27-20 win.
Patriots 1-0-0
While we were hoping to see something like the shootout between Tom Brady and Deshaun Watson that we saw last year, instead we saw Watson throw only one touchdown. Brady threw three touchdowns and led the Patriots to a 27-20 victory.
Jets 1-0-0
Sam Darnold started his NFL career by throwing a pick six on his first ever throw. After that, the Jets never looked back. Darnold ended the night completing 16/21 passes for 198 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. The Jets defense picked off Matthew Stafford four times and the Jets came out on top 48-17.
Bills 0-1-0
Surely Nathan Peterman couldn’t play worse than he did last year when he threw five interceptions in one game and earned a QB rating of 17.9, right? Unfortunately for Peterman and the Bills, wrong. On Sunday he only completed 5 of 18 passes for 24 yards and 2 interceptions, earning him a rating of 0.0. Josh Allen got to see some playing time in the second half and was able to complete 6/15 passes for 74 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Rough start for the Bills. Meanwhile, the Ravens offense put up great numbers and claimed a commanding 47-3 victory.
AFC West
Chiefs 1-0-0
The Chiefs’ victory on Sunday moves their winning streak against the Chargers up to nine in a row. Needless to say, the Chiefs have absolutely dominated the Chargers in recent history. We got to see Patrick Mahomes throw for 256 yards, 4 touchdowns, and no interceptions—a great start to the season. Tyreek Hill also had a day, catching 7/8 passes and putting up 169 yards and 2 touchdowns on top of a 91 yard punt return touchdown. The Chiefs’ strong offensive performance led them to a 38-28 victory.
Broncos 1-0-0
Case Keenum threw 3 interceptions, but also put up 329 yards and 3 touchdowns in 25/39 completions. Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman, the rookies, both had 15 carries for 71 yards, but Lindsay separated himself from Freeman in the receiving game by catching 2 passes for 31 yards. The Broncos were able to take the lead and hold it in the fourth quarter, winning 27-24.
Raiders 0-1-0
The Raiders started out well, heading into the locker room up 13-10, but the second half was a different story. Derek Carr completed 29/40 passes throwing for 303 yards, but no touchdowns and 3 interceptions. In the first quarter, Marshawn Lynch carried defenders into the end zone, but that was the only Raiders touchdown. In the end, the Rams beat the Raiders by a score of 33-13.
Chargers 0-1-0
Philip Rivers looked good for the Chargers, throwing for 424 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception on 34/51 passes. He was plagued by some dropped passes, but was still able to lead his team to score on those drives. Melvin Gordon led the team in receptions with 9, totaling up to 102 receiving yards. However, Rivers and Gordon’s solid performances weren’t enough for the Chargers and they lost their ninth straight against the Chiefs, this time by a score of 28-38.
AFC North
Ravens 1-0-0
The Ravens jumped all over Nathan Peterman on Sunday, limiting him to just 24 yards. Joe Flacco had a great day, completing 25/34 passes for 236 yards and 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. Three of Baltimore’s running backs scored a touchdown too, Kenneth Dixon, Javorius Allen, and Alex Collins. Baltimore looked great in their win, claiming a 47-3 victory.
Bengals 1-0-0
Andy Dalton put up a solid performance against the Colts, completing 21/28 passes for 243 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. However, it wasn’t all good for the Bengals. Safety Shawn Williams was ejected in the first quarter of the game for unnecessary roughness on a hit against Andrew Luck. Still, the Bengals were able to win 34-23.
Browns 0-0-1
The Browns finally ended their 17 game losing streak! Except, they still didn’t get a win. Instead of a losing streak, they now have a winless streak as they tied with the Steelers on Sunday. The Browns managed to force six Pittsburgh turnovers, but were only able to put up 21 points as they played in poor conditions. Neither team looked sharp and both teams missed game winning field goals in overtime. The final score was 21-21.
Steelers 0-0-1
The Steelers have to be frustrated with their performance. Ben Roethlisberger threw three interceptions and fumbled twice from being sacked. James Conner was a bright point for the Steelers, with 31 carries for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns as well as 5 catches for 57 yards. Kicker Chris Boswell also missed a game winning field goal in overtime, resulting in the game ending in a 21-21 tie.

Jaguars 1-0-0
The Jaguars experience a scare when Leonard Fournette went out with a hamstring injury, but are not too worried about the extent of the injury. T.J. Yeldon took over for Fournette and rushed for 51 yards on 14 carries. The Jaguars were able to beat the Giants 20-15.
Texans 0-1-0
In Deshaun Watson’s return from a torn ACL last year, he completed 17/34 passes for 176 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. He did not perform as well as he did last year and the Texans lost to the Patriots 27-20.
Titans 0-1-0
The Titan’s season probably could not have started worse, with three starters sustaining injuries. Left tackle Taylor Lewan suffered a concussion, Marcus Mariota was taken out due to an elbow injury, and Delanie Walker left with a season ending ankle injury. On top of the injuries, the Titans lost to the Dolphins 20-27.
Colts 0-1-0
The Colts led the Bengals 23-17 until the fourth quarter, when the Bengals scored 17 unanswered points. In Andrew Luck’s return, he threw for 319 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception by completing 39/53 passes. His solid effort wasn’t enough for the Colts, as the Bengals claimed a 34-23 win.
NFC East
Redskins 1-0-0
Alex Smith’s debut for the Redskins went well, as he completed 21/30 passes for 255 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions. Adrian Peterson ran for 96 yards on 26 carries, while Chris Thompson ran for 65 yards on 5 carries. Both backs looked sharp, but, from an YPC carry perspective, Chris Thompson outperformed Peterson. The Redskins were able to win by a commanding score of 24-6.
Eagles 1-0-0
With Carson Wentz not cleared for contact yet, Nick Foles led the Eagles in the NFL season opener and threw for 117 yards and 1 interception on 19/34 completions. The Eagles and Falcons started off slow, heading into halftime just 6-3 in favor of the Falcons. In the second half, Eagles pulled off the “Philly Special” again for one of the biggest plays of the game. In the end, the Eagles pulled off an 18-12 victory.
Giants 0-1-0
Odell Beckham Jr. looked good in his return from last year’s season ending ankle injury, catching 11 passes for 111 yards. Also, Saquon Barkley looked good on his season debut, rushing for 106 yards and 1 touchdown on 18 carries. Odell and Barkley’s performances weren’t enough for the Giants, however, and they lost 20-15.
Cowboys 0-1-0
The Cowboys opened their season with a poor offensive performance. Dak Prescott threw for 170 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions and completed 19/29 passes, but he did rush for a two point conversion. Their only touchdown came off of an Ezekiel Elliot touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys lost to the Panthers 16-8.
NFC West
Rams 1-0-0
Jared Goff and Todd Gurley both looked good for the Raiders. Goff completed 18/33 passes for 233 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions while Gurley rushed 20 times for 108 yards. The Rams trailed at halftime by three, but they shut out the Raiders in the second half. They were able to intercept Derek Carr three times and won 33-13.
Seahawks 0-1-0
On top of a loss, Seattle lost Doug Baldwin to a sprained MCL. Russell Wilson had a solid game, completing 19/33 passes for 298 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. However, his performance wasn’t enough to lead the Seahawks to victory and they lost 27-24 to the Denver Broncos.
49ers 0-1-0
Jimmy Garoppolo did not have a very sharpest start to the season, but overall put up a solid performance, completing 15/33 passes for 261 yards, 1 touchdown, and 3 interceptions. Garoppolo’s touchdown pass was the 49ers’ lone touchdown of the day and they ended up falling to the Vikings 24-16.
Cardinals 0-1-0
The Cardinals offense was quiet against the Redskins. Sam Bradford threw for 153 yards and 1 interception on 20/34 passes and David Johnson only ran for 37 yards on 9 carries. Johnson did score the team’s lone touchdown in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough for the Cardinals to win. They lost to the Redskins 24-6.
NFC North
Packers 1-0-0
This game started with the Bears scoring 20 unanswered points and Aaron Rodgers going down with a knee injury and ended with a miraculous comeback. Rodgers was able to come back into the game in the second half after the Bears scored their 20th point and led the Packers to victory by throwing for 273 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Packers won by a final score of 24-23.
Vikings 1-0-0
Kirk Cousins looked great in his debut for the Vikings, completing 20/36 passes for 244 yards and 2 touchdowns. However, the real MVP for the Vikings was the defense, which forced four turnovers including a pick six by rookie cornerback Mike Hughes. The Vikings were able to claim a 24-16 win over the 49ers.
Lions 0-1-0
Matthew Stafford had a bad game on Monday Night Football, throwing four interceptions against the Jets. Stafford completed 27/46 passes for 286 yards and 1 touchdown, but his interceptions negated his positive performance. The Lions couldn’t get the run game established at all and ultimately lost 48-17.
Bears 0-1-0
It looked like the Bears were going to win this one easily, but Aaron Rodgers had different plans when he came back onto he field in the second half following an injury scare. Khalil Mack looked very good in his debut as a Chicago Bear, collecting 2 unassisted tackles, 1 assisted tackle, 1 sack, and 1 interception which he returned for a touchdown. Still, his performance wasn’t enough and the Bears lost 24-23.
NFC South
Buccaneers 1-0-0
Ryan Fitzpatrick led the Buccaneers to win in a shootout against the Saints. Fitzpatrick—or, Fitzmagic would be more appropriate—completed 21/28 passes for 417 yards, 4 touchdowns, and no interceptions. His outstanding performance led the Buccaneers to a 48-40 victory.
Panthers 1-0-0
The Panthers got a win, but not without paying a price in the form of injuries. Greg Olsen suffered a foot injury, Daryl Williams suffered a knee injury, and Luke Keuchly hyperextended his knee. In a low scoring performance, Cam Newton passed for 161 yards and led the Panthers to a 16-8 victory.
Falcons 0-1-0
Matt Ryan threw for 251 yards, with 169 of those yards going to Julio Jones. The Falcons saw several injuries in the season opener, with the biggest three being Devonta Freeman sustaining a knee injury, Deion Jones going out with a foot injury, Keanu Neal suffering a season ending torn ACL. Freeman’s injury doesn’t appear to be significant and he should be able to play next week. The Falcons ended the game on a play nearly identical to what we saw in last year’s playoffs and lost 18-12.
Saints 0-1-0
Drew Brees looked great against the Buccaneers, but was unable to get the victory. Brees threw for 439 yards and 3 touchdowns, completing 37/45 of his passes. His effort wasn’t enough, as the Saints trailed the Buccaneers for most of the game and ended up losing 48-40.
