Here’s a look at 7 free agent players who could step in and help the Chiefs at key positions before the roster is set.
With 53-man rosters becoming mandatory league-wide as of Saturday, there are going so be some names out there that the Chiefs should consider. Nearly 1,200 players will be released overall. Some of them will find a new team, and others will land on a practice squad. However, for many of them this is the end of the road. A lot of NFL dreams will come to an end.
Whether they are promising rookies let go or veterans with something left to give, there are free agents who could still help the Chiefs—including some faces who have been available for a while. For some reason, the Chiefs might have wanted to wait to see how current players looked or how roster cuts shook out. It’s impossible to know from an internal standpoint.
So, let’s just get right into it. Here are 7 free agents as of today that the Chiefs could bring in for added depth or serious help, starting with a man we’ve discussed often.
Bashaud Breeland – Cornerback – 26-years-old
Breeland’s is a story we’re all familiar with at this point—or should be. He was signed to a 3-year, $24 million contract with Carolina Panthers before failing his physical, due to an infected cut on his foot which nullified the deal. Months later, he’s taken several free agent visits, and the Chiefs are among the interested. Whether it be he isn’t fully healthy or he just hasn’t got an offer he likes ,the fact remains he is still unsigned. Breeland would be an instant upgrade for us at the cornerback position. He would compete for the outside cornerback slot right out the gate.
Jeremy Lane – Cornerback – 28
Jeremy Lane is another candidate who could come in and compete for a starting job. Absolute worst case, he is better depth out the gate than David Amerson, Tremon Smith, Arrion Springs or possibly Orlando Scandrick can provide. Lane has played his entire six-year career with the Seattle Seahawks. He is not a guy who is going to come in and wow you, but he is a nice option in a scary secondary.
