Kansas City Chiefs admit failed experiment known as David Amerson
By Jalon Dodson
The Kansas City Chiefs have waived CB David Amerson ahead of the 53-man roster deadline.
David Amerson was an experiment gone wrong for the Kansas City Chiefs’ struggling secondary. Most Chiefs fans had been calling for Amerson’s release following a lackluster preseason for the team. Amerson had struggled during the team’s preseason games, earning the ire of Andy Reid and the coaches as they hoped he’d turn the corner.
It appears the Chiefs have found better options, and have decided to move on from the former second round pick. The club had tried to test the waters with Amerson, signing him in mid-February, just one week after the Raiders had released him.
The constant struggle the Chiefs’ secondary has had to face is no secret, thus this move may come as a surprise to many of Chiefs fans who had projected he made the final 53. As the offseason progressed, however, more options presented themselves for the Chiefs, specifically the recently signed Orlando Scandrick.
In the last few days, the Chiefs traded for safety Jordan Lucas in exchange for a 2020 7th-round pick from the Miami Dolphins. They had also traded with the Dallas Cowboys for CB Charvarius Ward in exchange for offensive lineman Parker Ehinger. This only made the Amerson experiment seem even more unsuccessful. After all, when a team is willing to trade for the fringe roster players of other teams at your position, it doesn’t bode well for the future.
Cutting David Amerson means the Chiefs are going with Kendall Fuller, Steven Nelson, Orlando Scandrick, Tremon Smith and Charvarius Ward for now. That’s a pretty good group as it stands, and with the surplus of options in waivers right now, I think the secondary has all the chance in the world to improve. Although, with a PFF rating of 45.3 for David Amerson, it’s safe to say that almost anyone would be an improvement for the Chiefs’ cornerback corps.
