Kansas City Chiefs acquire safety Jordan Lucas from Miami Dolphins

The Kansas City Chiefs have traded for safety Jordan Lucas from the Miami Dolphins in a preseason trade before roster cuts are due.
The Kansas City Chiefs have pulled off their second trade in the last 24 hours to bolster their secondary before roster cuts are due. This time they’ve announced the acquisition of Jordan Lucas for an undisclosed draft pick from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 7th round pick in 2020.
Lucas is a 25-year-old safety who was the Dolphins sixth round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Since then he’s played solely as a special teams player which makes the acquisition here a bit surprising given that the Chiefs have plenty of players who have already been praised for their special teams play who might not even be on the final roster.
Lucas figures to be replacing Robert Golden who was allowed to leave the team of his own accord. Golden was brought in to be a special teams ace along with some depth, a la Steven Terrell’s spot in 2017. With injuries to Dan Sorensen and Eric Berry’s sore heel, it makes sense to add a bit of depth if Jordan Sterns is not ready for the active roster.
The trade is interesting because Lucas was actually likely to get cut from the team. Maybe the Chiefs are trying to get out front of other teams ahead of them on the waiver wire. For now the Chiefs have to figure out where Lucas fits alongside Leon McQuay, Eric Murray, Armani Watts and Berry or if he actually supplants one of them. If so, watch for potentially McQuay to hit waivers—perhaps in hopes of a practice squad role. (Of course, this is all conjecture.)
The Chiefs already pulled the trigger on a trade to bring in cornerback Charvarius Ward from the Dallas Cowboys in a deal that was announced on Thursday night just before the team’s last preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Ward was acquired in exchange for veteran guard Parker Ehinger who was the team’s former fourth round pick.
