Five things we’ve learned about the 2018 Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs have now played three preseason games. While preseason games themselves can be meaningless we have learned some valuable things from them.
As the final seconds of the Kansas City Chiefs 27-20 loss to the Chicago Bears ticked away it was hard to feel good about the performance. In a game where the Chiefs played their starters into the third quarter as a dress rehearsal the hope was they would look sharp and ready for the regular season, but that didn’t happen. The fact that it was against the Bears second string players only made things more depressing. The starting offense was just okay and the starting defense looked—for lack of a more refined description—like hot garbage.
The tricky thing about the preseason is trying to figure out what matters. The final score certainly doesn’t matter. The fact that the Bears second string offense put up 24 first half points against the Chiefs first string defense is certainly a little more concerning. The challenge is to sort through what’s meaningless preseason filler and what is an indicator of what we should expect from the 2018 Kansas City Chiefs when the games do count.
Yes, the Chiefs have one remaining preseason game coming up on Thursday but with the starters not playing it will be more of a last chance for guys to fight their way onto the bottom of the roster than it will be a look at the team that will actually take the field for the opener. So we now have most of the information that we are going to get about the 2018 Chiefs before the real games start.
So the question is, what have we learned? I think there are several things that we can safely say about the Chiefs now that we’ve seen them play three preseason games. I’ve picked the five I think are the most important for this post.
Let’s start with the one that will be most relevant going into the fourth and final preseason game where guys are fighting for a job.
