The Chicago Bears rolled over the visiting Kansas City Chiefs in a preseason win at Soldier Field on Saturday afternoon.

The roles were supposed to be reversed.

The Chicago Bears were resting all of their starters, while the Kansas City Chiefs were playing the first unit on both sides but that didn’t stop the hosts from rolling up 27 points in a preseason win over the Chiefs 27-20..

The visiting Chiefs looked impressive on offense and should walk away feeling confident about new quarterback Patrick Mahomes’s ability to take charge and move the chains. Mahomes went completed 18 of 24 pass attempts for 196 yards and 1 touchdowns against 0 interceptions. Then again, how good can the Chiefs feel about the effort when the Bears were sitting their best defenders on the field?

As for the other side of the ball, Chase Daniel and the rest of the Bears backups had no issues at all moving the chains as well. The former Chiefs quarterback completed 15 of 18 pass attempts for 198 passing yards of his own. He threw two touchdowns. Even more impressive was the 47 rushing yards he put up on the Chiefs, showing his ability to extend a play in myriad ways.

The Bears’ ability to roll over the secondary in particular is going to be a talking point for the rest of the week as a lot of guys struggled to make plays like they should. The unit is clearly missing Eric Berry and there’s a lack of guys willing to look like a quality “next man up” when given the brass ring to proverbially seize and show what they can do in a game-time situation.

On the positive side, the Chiefs saw some nice plays from several young players against the Bears, and guys like De’Anthony Thomas and Spencer Ware saw their first preseason action after returning from serious injuries.

The Chiefs are now 1-2 in the preseason and will face the Green Bay Packers in their final preseason game on a short week this Thursday.
