Former Kansas City Chiefs safety Jeron Johnson has a new home with the Dallas Cowboys, per Todd Archer.

The Dallas Cowboys have added a veteran safety to the mix of players vying for spots in the secondary on Tuesday with the signing of former Kansas City Chiefs safety Jeron Johnson, per beat writer Todd Archer.

Johnson had a very short-lived stint with the Chiefs back in 2016, as he signed during the preseason but failed to make the active roster in the process. Johnson entered camp hoping to best rookie Eric Murray and back-up Daniel Sorensen for a role in the secondary, but the Chiefs decided to go with the aforementioned along with cornerback D.J. White. Johnson was cut along with Jamell Fleming and Brock Vereen in competition that summer.

The Cowboys recently found out that safety Xavier Woods will miss a few weeks due to an hamstring injury that will last into the regular season.

Johnson already has enjoyed a much longer career than expected given that he entered the league in 2011 as an undrafted free agent with the Seattle Seahawks. He spent four years with Seattle and played a total of 50 games as a reserve and special teams performer. From there he signed with the Washington Redskins in 2015 on a two-year deal but only lasted one year, and that’s when the Chiefs claimed him.

Johnson, who is now 30-years-old, was injured last season after signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars and landed on injured reserve. The Cowboys will be his fifth NFL team.
