The Kansas City Chiefs Chiefs have officially signed former Washington Redskins cornerback Orlando Scandrick.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed veteran cornerback Orlando Scandrick, bringing in some veteran help for a young secondary that could use some experienced depth.

The Chiefs signed Scandrick to a 1-year, $1.5 million deal. The signing comes as somewhat of a surprise to Chiefs fans. The veteran cornerback’s performance has been rather lackluster over the last year or two, most recently during a frustrating 2017 season with the Dallas Cowboys.

It’s no secret the Chiefs’ secondary has been struggling given the lack of proven playmakers as well as current injuries—both at corner and safety. There’s been some rumors that Scandrick could even end up playing some safety for the Chiefs.

Per PFF, Orlando Scandrick was rated the #108 cornerback in the NFL in 2017, garnering a defensive grade of 55.3. To put that in perspective, former Chiefs defensive back Phillip Gaines graded in at 42.6, good for a rank of #118. It seems like the Chiefs’ signing of Scandrick is the cheaper value deal after being unable to make a deal with former Redskins CB Bashaud Breeland’s camp. Hopefully this situation doesn’t turn into what the Chiefs went through last year, after signing a veteran cornerback in Darrelle Revis who was too far out of his prime.

The benefit of this signing, however, is there’s always a chance for a bounce back. Scandrick has been an excellent pass defender in years past. Signing a veteran always comes with its risks, but there’s no reward without at least the attempt. The Chiefs’ secondary has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. Let’s hope this signing doesn’t fall under the latter.
