Chiefs vs. Falcons: Kansas City’s 3 best plays from the first preseason win
By Matt Conner
Patrick Mahomes showed off his arm and the Kansas City Chiefs walked out of Atlanta with their first preseason win.
The Kansas City Chiefs turned the tide of the preseason with a 28-14 win over the host Atlanta Falcons that brought their preseason record to 1-1.
The Chiefs first-team unit played the entire first half, giving Patrick Mahomes several drives with which to showcase his skills and start to get a feel for how the regular season will treat him—with both the good and bad. Mahomes finished the night 8 of 12 for 138 passing yards with 1 touchdown and 1 touchdown.
However, the highlights go farther than just Mahomes’s cannon of an arm. Let’s count these down.
3. Gehrig Dieter’s Touchdown
It’s great to see the Chiefs have some security at quarterback behind Patrick Mahomes as Chad Henne had a nice run with the second unit in the win over the Falcons. The highlight also included a nice prospect at wide receiver in Gehrig Dieter who is hoping to climb uphill enough to surprise the Chiefs and win a spot on the active roster. Being able to track the ball and deliver the goods like this will certainly help his cause.
2. Ben Niemann’s Pick-6
It seems like everyone is rooting for the Iowa product to win a roster spot as he continues to show his skills in the little and, now, big things. This interception was a gimme for sure, but Niemann showed nice hands and awareness here for sure. It will be interesting to see how well he continues to impress with his reps in how he handles the run and coverage snaps in the middle.
1. The Mahomes-to-Hill Cannon
Is this really a question of what’s best? The arm strength of Patrick Mahomes is one of the most hyped storylines for the Chiefs entering the season, but Chiefs fans finally got a great look at just how far he can deliver the football with this unbelievable throw to Tyreek Hill that traveled nearly 70 yards in the air alone!
It will be exciting to see how Mahomes looks once he’s able to settle in for the length of a full game as Andy Reid pulls back the curtain on the playbook.
