The New England Patriots and New York Jets are still in the hunt for Bashaud Breeland, while other teams are still unknown.
A decision was expected some time ago, but the only thing that’s clear now after weeks of waiting is that free agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland is just fine with taking his time.
The 26-year-old corner is the easily the best pass defender left on the open market and could arguably be the best defender still around. He’s already earned a three-year, $24 million offer this spring from the Carolina Panthers which was, unfortunately for him, nullified by a failed physical. Instead of scrambling to take the best deal from the first interested suitor, Breeland has instead exhibited a very calculated, cautious approach that has instead kept other teams waiting as he looks for the best overall deal.
To date, several teams have brought him in for visits, a list that includes the Kansas City Chiefs. Breeland hung out with the Chiefs over parts of two days and seemed to enjoy his time with the coaching staff, front office personnel and potential teammates. He’s played with Kendall Fuller and David Amerson in the secondary before during his four-year stint with the Washington Redskins, so he’d certainly have some instant chemistry if he were to sign with K.C.
However Breeland is clearly open to the highest bidder no matter how comfortable he might be in one location. He’s also visited the Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots—the latter being the latest visit. The New York Jets have also maintained vocal interest in terms of leaked rumors, but for one reason or another, Breeland has yet to make a scheduled visit to Todd Bowles’ team.
The latest rumors circling Breeland’s camp come from Josina Anderson who identified two teams in the mix. Unfortunately there was no mention at all of Kansas City among the lot.
Perhaps the Chiefs have extended their final offer already and are waiting for Breeland to officially respond. Perhaps he already has and is unwilling to sign on the dotted line. Maybe the Chiefs never made an offer despite how the visit looked from the outside. Then again maybe Breeland will be back around to give each and every team a final chance to match or beat the best offer he receives through it all.
Breeland might take a bit to make his decision but it shouldn’t be too much longer given that each team is getting ready to play their first preseason game (or have already moved on from it). Teams have to start coming into serious view for each coaching staff and front office and Breeland can only toy around with offers for so long. Until then, Chiefs Kingdom can simply hope and wait along with a growing number of franchises for the free agent defensive back.
