The Kansas City Chiefs are already loaded but a bit further down the depth chart, Demarcus Robinson is also emerging.

Tyreek Hill needs no introduction atop the depth chart. Sammy Watkins has enjoyed a red carpet rollout as well. Beyond those two, however, the Kansas City Chiefs have some significant decisions to make at wide receiver after their 1 and 1A options.

Chris Conley is often considered the front runner as the next wideout on the depth chart and the one to likely receive the most remaining targets. As the senior wide receiver on the roster, Conley knows the offense and is also a very gifted athlete ready to return from injury to show what he can do in a contract year.

Then again, the Chiefs also boast a young, deep athletic corps of other potential options. Jehu Chesson was a fourth round pick last year who stood out on special teams and has made some spectacular grabs in camp. Marcus Kemp and Gehrig Dieter are practice squad prospects vying for a push to the active roster. De’Anthony Thomas is a savvy veteran returning from a broken leg who is always dangerous with the ball.

All those options notwithstanding, it might be former Florida wide receiver Demarcus Robinson who is making the most noise as a developing pass catcher who could form a special connection with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. Mahomes already showed a penchant for going to Robinson in the Week 17 victory over the Denver Broncos last year when he targeted Robinson 10 times. Yet even when Smith was back, Robinson presented well in the team’s loss to the Titans in the playofs with 4 catches (on 4 targets) for 57 yards and 1 touchdown.

After coming on strong at the end of last year, Robinson is leveraging that momentum to start strong in training camp as well. As he explains, it’s simply an extension of the offseason work he put in with the team’s new quarterback.

"“Patrick [Mahomes] and I stayed and worked out together this offseason,” Robinson explained. “It was just a matter of getting everything down in the playbook. I’m way more confident now—just getting more acquainted in the playbook and knowing all three spots on the field. I don’t have to think about it anymore. I just go out there and make plays.”"

Next. Don't worry about Patrick Mahomes's interception. dark

Last year, Robinson had 21 catches on 39 targets in 16 games for the Chiefs. The productivity resulted in 212 receiving yards and no touchdowns, although he did have that postseason score. Compared to zero catches the previous year after serving only on special teams, however, it was a nice arrival onto the offensive scene. A leap in productivity and reliability would give the Chiefs another offensive wrinkle to throw at teams already struggling to deal with the number of options for Andy Reid.
