Kansas City Chiefs: 4 free agents who could help right now
By Matt Conner
Bashaud Breeland, cornerback
We’ve spilled a lot of ink already on Breeland, so there’s really not much more to say about a 26-year-old cornerback who seemed interested in joining the Chiefs and vice versa. He’s a good fit at a thin position that could really help a team not only put a better starting line-up out there from the outset but weather a full 16-game season and then some, assuming the Chiefs make it to the postseason for the fifth time in six seasons.
Breeland, however, seems content to wait. What’s the hold up? Earning back as much of his original three-year, $24 million contract as he possibly can, the same contract that was nullified by a failed physical with the Carolina Panthers only months ago. As much as coaching, teammates, scheme fit, city and weather can help make a decision for a free agent, it almost always comes down to money and Breeland lost a lot of it. That’s not to throw shade on the man at all. He’s worked hard to get here and has earned the right to take however long he wants.
If the Chiefs are going to win the services of Breeland, it’s going to likely be because the cornerback felt he hit a brick wall in his leverage. If every team is only throwing him a single year offering, for example, then the Chiefs look a lot better than other clubs trying to fight their way out of the divisional basement. Otherwise, the cash-strapped Chiefs are likely to see him suit up elsewhere.
Fortunately they’re still in the running.
