Indianapolis Colts

I have no way of knowing for sure, of course, but my guess is that the Indianapolis Colts are the favorites here.

Every player wants to be in a fun city. They want to play close to friends and family. They want to play with a contender, and they want to be near teammates and coaches they either know and/or trust. But the reality behind it all is that they just want to get paid, first and foremost, and Breeland is no different.

Breeland is a man who lost a $24 million deal just months ago. He’s played out the last four years on a deal that paid him $2.7 million total, and earlier this spring, he had a deal worth 10 times that amount. That’s not something you get over easily.

This entire affair of multiple visits and taking his time is largely about one thing—or it should be. It’s about getting that payday back because every player has worked his ass off for such a moment his entire life. Reaching NFL free agency is the financial reward for every two-a-day going all the way back to high school. For Breeland, he’s not making his decisions on anything else—at least not as a major consideration.

So here’s the reality. The Colts not only have the money to pay a nice defender this time of year but they also have a reason. Unlike some others on this list, they’ve checked in on Breeland more than once and Chris Ballard’s young defense could use a known quantity among a lot of potential in a very inexperienced (and rather thin) secondary.

For a secondary employing former Chiefs pick D.J. White and still signing the Shamarko Thomases of the world in recent days, Bashaud Breeland would be landing an enormous fish at the end of a long trip out to sea. That’s why they are the favorites here.
