Bashaud Breeland rumors: Baltimore Ravens are “getting more aggressive” in pursuit of cornerback
By Matt Conner
A new team has entered the running for free agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland, and one reporter says they’re getting “more aggressive.”
If you were hoping for a decision soon enough from free agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland, you might have to wait a bit longer because a new team has reportedly entered the running and they’re “getting more aggressive” in their pursuit.
The Baltimore Ravens are the newest team hoping to swoop in and sign Breeland, a 26-year-old defensive back who has started 58 games outside at cornerback for the Washington Redskins since 2014. The former fourth round pick has earned himself a nice list of suitors, all of whom he has visited within the last week, including the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Oakland Raiders and Chiefs are the primary four teams in the running before the Ravens came calling. Per Josina Anderson:
On the surface, it’s a bit difficult to understand why the Ravens would be so interested in Breeland except to keep another AFC team from signing him, since their own need is not as readily apparent as it is for, say, the Chiefs. The Ravens have former Chiefs corner Brandon Carr as well as former first round pick Jimmy Smith on the outside. Last year they also invested their first round pick in Marlon Humphrey out of Alabama. They also have Tavon Young and this year’s rookie Anthony Averett along with several others in camp. That’s a fairly talented corps.
Then again a team can never have enough defensive backs, and even Andy Reid said as much on Thursday when asked about the Chiefs own pursuit. Perhaps Breeland will be able to make up for the nullified $24 million deal he lost earlier this offseason when he failed a physical with the Carolina Panthers, given this many suitors.
As for the Chiefs, their odds of signing Breeland seem to be slimmer with each passing day since his mid-week visit.
