In our latest AFC West positional rankings post, we take a closer look at the division’s running backs to see who is best among a talented lot.

Our series breaking down the AFC West by position continues today with the division’s running backs. The AFC West has been historically good at the running back position with all-time greats such as LaDainian Tomlinson, Jamaal Charles, Bo Jackson, Terrell Davis, and Marcus Allen.

Last season, the AFC West held the rushing title winner.  For the 2018-2019 season, where do we stand? The Kansas City Chiefs have added depth at the position all offseason. The Denver Broncos are looking to use a new back this season. Can the AFC West still show dominance in the rushing game? Let’s start at the top.

1. Kareem Hunt, Kansas City Chiefs

Kareem Hunt took the league by storm after gaining the opportunity to start after Spencer Ware went down with a knee injury in the preseason. He won the rushing title in 2017 over Rams star Todd Gurley, becoming just the sixth rookie in NFL history to lead the league in rushing. With the additions at running back, one may wonder if Kansas City may decide to do more running back by committee work.

This offseason, the Chiefs have also added Sammy Watkins to an already talented group of receivers. With Patrick Mahomes’ willingness to throw long passes, Hunt may find more room to run in the middle of the field. Kareem Hunt is a tough runner who always seems to fall forward. It will be interesting to see his production in a new spread offense. After a great year last year, Hunt looks to improve his game even further.

2016-2017:

272 carries, 1,327 yards, 4.9 yards per carry, 8 touchdowns.

Prediction:

249 carries, 1,270 yards, 5.1 yards per carry, 7 touchdowns.
