Kansas City Chiefs: Undrafted free agents and their roster chances
By Grant Tuttle
Step Durham, DB, Georgia Tech
Durham flashes some ability in man coverage; making great reads and showing bend in his hips. However, many of his best plays at Georgia Tech were on poorly placed passes, putting him in prime position to make a play. Because Durham has had an existing hamstring injury, he was virtually unscoutable this off-season. It makes for an interesting training camp story.
Chance of making the roster: Poor
While Durham may be better than advertised, at his best it will be a challenge for him to take a roster spot from the defensive backs that he is competing with.
D’Montre Wade, DB, Murray State
Coming out of Murray State, there is not a lot to look at with D’Montre Wade. However, he was a Senior Bowl and Combine invite. Many had him graded as a 6th-7th round talent. Unfortunately for him, he went to a small school.
I like Wade and I think he has a pretty high ceiling. I also believe that he is more suited to play at safety than a cornerback. He has great length and awareness of receivers around him. He also shows talent in open field tackling. His biggest weakness, to me, is his press skills. But, like I said, I think he is a safety.
Chance of making the roster: Fair
Kansas City may be looking to add different depth pieces after last season’s debacle when Eric Berry went down with injury. While Wade may take a while to develop, I think he would make a very good special teams player.
Final Tally
- Good – 1
- Fair – 6
- Poor – 11
I truly believe that the Chiefs got some of the best undrafted players available. This entire class shows relatively high ceilings. I am not an expert and I don’t know what the Chiefs may see in some of these players, but I think there is a chance that we see 3 or 4 guys make the roster as undrafted free agents. Time will tell and I can’t wait to see what happens in training camp.
