The final member of the Kansas City Chiefs draft class has signed his rookie deal with the news that Derrick Nnadi is now under contract.

The sixth and final member of the Kansas City Chiefs is now under contract with the team with the announcement that defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi has signed his rookie contract.

Nnadi signed several weeks after some of his Chiefs teammates this offseason, but with the slotted contract system—thanks, CBA!—none of this really matters. It does, however, help to cross the requisite “t”s as they say and should help all players now focus completely on learning the plays and schemes needed to make an on-field impact this year and beyond.

Nnadi was a very interesting third round addition for a Chiefs, an under-the-radar pick known for being a tremendous run defender along the defensive line for Florida State. Nnadi might be more of a two-down player than a Chris Jones sort as a true pocket disruptor, but anyone who watched the Tennessee Titans and Derrick Henry simply run out the clock in the team’s playoff loss last January tells you all you need to know.

The Chiefs entered the offseason with a clear vision to rework the line and add significant beef and effort up front. Anthony Hitchens and Reggie Ragland are now roaming the middle with Derrick Johnson nowhere in sight for the first time since 2005. Breeland Speaks was drafted to bring a heavier edge rusher into the mix at outside linebacker and defensive end. Xavier Williams is another anchor signed to a two-year deal who supplants Bennie Logan who left after a single season for the Titans.

Brett Veach said after the draft that he expects both Speaks and Nnadi to come in immediately and provide meaningful snaps. While a starting role is no guarantee, the loss of Logan and Rakeem Nunez-Roches has opened the door wide for Nnadi to step in and earn as much playing time as he wants.

Nnadi’s deal is slotted for an estimated $3,851,224 million over the course of four years, which includes $720K cap hit for the 2018 regular season.
