The Kansas City Chiefs newest cornerback has been facing Patrick Mahomes in practice and has come away a believer in the hype he’s hearing.

Even before he was on the Kansas City Chiefs active roster, David Amerson was used to facing Chiefs quarterbacks on a semi-regular basis. To be exact, Amerson played the Chiefs for two complete games a year as a starter for the Oakland Raiders.

These days, he’s expected to start on the outside for the Chiefs in 2018 after signing a one-year deal this offseason, which means he’s seeing more and more of the team’s new quarterback in practice during OTAs and minicamp. Fortunately he’s coming away a believer in Patrick Mahomes.

Amerson spoke to reporters on Tuesday following the first practices of mandatory minicamp and said that Mahomes has been “good as advertised”:

"“He’s good. I think he’s as good as advertised. He definitely makes some plays like ‘Oh wow’. I’ve seen him make some no look throws and all kinds of stuff I’ve never seen. So you can definitely see the ability and I think the more he grows as a player the more of the greatness we’ll see.”"

Mahomes has been earning significant buzz from local and national analysts for several reasons—from his cannon of an arm to his prolific college stats to working with Andy Reid to the plethora of playmakers around him in the Chiefs offense. While some believe the hype is a bit too much, Mahomes is taking it all in stride and saying all the right things.

It helps to hear that Amerson believes in the man under center for the Chiefs, since he’s seeing him up close in practice every single day. Fans are also anxious to see this “wow” factor can show up when it counts the most. If so, it’s going to be a very exciting season at Arrowhead.
