David Amerson signs with Kansas City Chiefs
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs continue to remake their depth chart at cornerback with the now official signing of former Raiders CB David Amerson.
The Kansas City Chiefs are making sure to completely reinvent themselves at a troubled spot in order to avoid the same similar troubles that plagued them in the secondary with 2017. The latest move from general manager Brett Veach to heal their woes at cornerback come with the officially announced signing of former Oakland Raiders corner David Amerson.
Amerson was released by the Raiders on February 5 and was in the midst of free agent visits when his signing was surprisingly announced on Friday night. The Raiders were going to be responsible for another significant portion of his recently signed 4-year extension, so they cut him before $5.5 million was going to be guaranteed.
Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star has some of the terms of the deal:
Amerson joins the Chiefs after spending the last three seasons with the Raiders, so both sides should already be very familiar with each other. Amerson started only 6 games last year as he was plagued by a foot injury that left him out for the Raiders final 9 games of the regular season. He had only 4 passes defended and zero interceptions in a frustrating year for both sides.
Amerson has 6 interceptions and 46 passes defended over his last three seasons in Oakland. He came into the league with the Washington Redskins as their second round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
As for what this means for the Chiefs, it continues to remake the secondary after a very disappointing season for the unit overall. The team has already traded for Redskins cornerback Kendall Fuller. They’ve also released Darrelle Revis. Kenneth Acker, Phillip Gaines, Steven Terrell and Terrance Mitchell are all unrestricted free agents, which means several more new faces could be joining the team even beyond Fuller and Amerson.

At the very least, Amerson joins a core that now includes Fuller, Marcus Peters and Steven Nelson as well.
