A recent story by Matt Miller at Bleacher Report had a quote from a Chiefs scout that Patrick Mahomes was torching Marcus Peters in practice.

Is there any way to add to the hype surrounding Patrick Mahomes? Yes, there is apparently since a quote given to Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller by an unnamed member of the Kansas City Chiefs front office noted that the second-year quarterback was “torching Marcus Peters” in practice during his rookie season.

Before we move on, it’s important for you to read the full quote and, actually, the full story. Here is Miller’s full paragraph from the piece:

"One source in the scouting staff pointed back to how well Mahomes did against the Chiefs’ starting defense last year while “playing with a bunch of practice squad receivers” and noted “he’s torching [Marcus Peters].”"

If you already were not overly excited about the arrival of Mahomes for some reason, then this should be the hook that gets you. Some fans have been upset over the myriad of offseason changes, from the lack of attention on cornerback to the trade of Alex Smith who was a proven starter. It’s a small minority, but they are rather vocal, and they are likely approaching Mahomes hype with a “I’ll believe it when I see it” attitude. That’s fair.

But it’s clear that the actual people paid to make these decisions are already all in on Mahomes. Andy Reid has high praise for him at every press conference. Brett Veach is already convinced he’s one of the greatest players he’s ever scouted. The players themselves have all said how impressed they are with his talents and learning curve.

But for those in the back, for the late adopters, just know this: apparently Patrick Mahomes was getting the best of Marcus Peters, who happened to be the best, with a subpar supporting cast. If you’re still smarting from the loss of Peters, in other words, then at least take solace in the fact that the Chiefs new quarterback has shown up well against him in the past.

Of course, this will be settled in a much more official capacity in a matter of months, when the Chiefs play the Los Angeles Rams in primetime in a special regular season exhibition in Mexico City. As part of the NFL’s continuing efforts to go global, both teams will head south of the border for a showdown that got a lot more interesting when the Rams traded a couple draft picks to the Chiefs for Peters this spring.

If Mahomes torches Peters there in Mexico City, anyone who is still not on board the Mahomes bandwagon will likely buy their ticket then.
