Junior Galette says he has a few free agent deals on the table but he’s thinking about retirement. Are the Chiefs one such team?

Earlier this offseason, Junior Galette was a hot name around these parts.

Galette, a former Washington Redskins pass rusher, hit free agency and looked like a solid bet for teams without the money to offer top dollar. For a team like the Chiefs, who could use a proven product at the position alongside the plethora of hopefuls (e.g. developmental talent) and who were trying to shed salary commitments this offseason, Galette looked like a potential addition and Chiefs Twitter made plenty of overtures to connect the dots.

Fast forward past the first few weeks of free agency and it’s clear that many veterans are going to be forced to wait. Galette is one such player. Despite a continual need for pass rushers for most teams in the NFL, Galette is apparently waiting for the market to match his expectations and is even considering calling it a career.

The Chiefs added Breeland Speaks to the pass rushing core in this year’s NFL Draft, a second round reach who came highly touted from the front office and coaching staff despite every draft analyst saying the value wasn’t there. Speaks will join Tanoh Kpassagnon as young, developmental talent for the Chiefs on the edge, both weighing in as heavy rushers (i.e. Speaks weighs 285) that may signal a new direction. The Chiefs also have Justin Houston, of course, and high hopes for Dee Ford to return successfully from a back injury.

If the Chiefs were one such team who offered him a deal, it would make sense that Galette might have been frustrated by the amount. Any offer from Brett Veach is likely going to be a team-friendly deal, especially knowing the draft was coming up. Perhaps Galette’s leverage will grow as the Chiefs enter training camp this summer if things aren’t coming along as hoped.

Galette had 20 tackles and 3 sacks last season as a situational pass rusher for the Redskins.
