THE BIGGEST SURPRISE
Maurice Hurst
My biggest surprise was a pick they didn’t even make. The fact that Veach did not take a chance on Maurice Hurst as he tumbled down the draft was just crazy to me. There have been other players that have been able to play with a heart condition for years in the league. When you look at the other picks that he made throughout the draft, and the obvious emphasis on the front seven. Hurst would of made a great addition. Instead we now have to face him twice a year for the next four years, I have a feeling this is something that Chiefs fans are going to hate to watch in the coming years. [Kody Latham]
Breeland Speaks
Interesting choice by the Chiefs. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one that was surprised by the fact that they passed up on a cornerback. I mean, Josh Jackson was selected right before us. You’d figure we would’ve traded up a little further, if we weren’t really interested in Speaks. They clearly saw something in Speaks that they just couldn’t pass up. Given that it’s something that made passing up on a chance to get Josh Jackson worth it. I’m really keen to seeing what this kid can do. [Jalon Dodson]
I think most fans are with me on this one. Obviously, defensive line was a need. But, most of us thought it was the second or third biggest need behind OLB and CB. However, Speaks looks and sounds the part of a nasty defensive lineman, something the Chiefs will definitely benefit from in the next several years. [Jordan Mannix]

When the Chiefs traded up, I was unsure what they would do. Every draft is hard to predict, especially as they occur. There are always surprises during every draft. This was the craziest, given how surprising the top 10 and the first round went. There were a couple other players who I thought would make a great fit for the Chiefs with this pick. But the Chiefs decided to go with Speaks. First of many defensive players they drafted. One thing is for sure: it shouldn’t be too hard to improve from their 25th ranking against the run. It’s a matter of how big of an improvement will the defense make in stopping the run. [Farzin Vousoughian]
I don’t think anyone saw this one coming. From the start, I expected the Chiefs to use their first choice in the draft on a corner, safety, or a more pronounced pass rusher (Lorenzo Carter, trade up for Harold Landry). However, Speaks is an underrated player out of Ole Miss. From a technical standpoint, Speaks has a bunch of weapons of his own that he can utilize, such as his quick hands and his long arm extension. It’s also a good sign that he draws comparisons to Tamba Hali. We just might seem Speaks starting alongside Justin Houston next season. [Kris Weeden]
When the Chiefs traded up and Isaiah Oliver was still on the board, I was certain that would be the pick. I was so caught off guard by the announcement that I forgot who Speaks was. I scouted him as a 3-4 end at the 5 technique, but the Chiefs announced and plan to use him as a linebacker. This pick got a lot of early criticism but as we all ran to Youtube to look at the kid play, it’s easy to see what Veach saw in Speaks. Regardless of what position Speaks will line up at the Chiefs need him to provide an impact on a defense that struggled tremendously last year. [Thomas Welte]
