According to Derrick Johnson, the Oakland Raiders presented him with the best opportunity to win a Super Bowl near the end of his playing career.

Derrick Johnson made it clear to reporters recently that there were multiple teams interested in him as a free agent, but ultimately the former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker chose to sign with his longtime rivals, the Oakland Raiders.

On Wednesday, Johnson spoke with reporters to discuss his recent transition a bit more, and he explained that the reason he signed with Oakland was because he believes they can deliver the Super Bowl ring he’s craved since he first entered the NFL in the 2005 NFL Draft.

"“It’s the perfect time to be a Raider,” he said. “A lot of new things are going on, and it’s all about opportunity. Here, at the Oakland Raiders, I have the opportunity to do something great, and that’s winning a ring at the end of the day. I’m not chasing anything else, but a ring.”"

The Raiders are a very interesting team this offseason for a number of reasons, especially since they hired Jon Gruden to be their head coach for a whopping $100 million over 10 years. From there, Gruden and Reggie McKenzie have added several veteran players and drafted projects like Mo Hurst and Arden Key.

Last year, the Raiders won 6 games and disappointed the myriad analysts who heralded them as the new ascending power in the AFC. The Raiders had, after all, won 12 games during the previous season and had several young players in key positions, from Derek Carr and Amari Cooper to Khalil Mack and Rodney Hudson.

Can the Raiders right the ship? Will DJ be a part of healing a broken defense? Johnson certainly has confidence not only in his own abilities but in the Raiders being able to compete immediately under Gruden’s leadership. What do you think, Chiefs Kingdom? Can the Raiders challenge the Chiefs and other teams for the division title? Or will they sink once again like they have for most of the last several seasons.
