The Kansas City Chiefs are starting to clear the way for more roster additions by cutting three players on Monday heading into rookie minicamp.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced the release of three veteran players after drafting six new rookies over NFL Draft weekend and inviting dozens more to join the team for rookie minicamp this spring.

On Monday night, the transactions came across the NFL wire that the Chiefs had cut defensive back Sheldon Price, tight end Anthony Firkser and defensive lineman Mike Purcell.

More from Arrowhead Addict

Purcell is a 303 lb. defensive tackle who signed with the Chiefs practice squad last November. He re-upped with a reserve/futures contract in January, but after the Chiefs recent draft haul of several more defensive linemen—most notably Derrick Nnadi and Breeland Speaks—the team decided to start the paring down process by releasing Purcell.

Price is a former UCLA standout who landed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent back in 2013. He actually found a bit of playing time in 2015 and even made his first start with the Baltimore Ravens the following year.

However he didn’t play at all in 2017 after starting the season with a concussion. He was released by Baltimore last October. He landed with the Chiefs in January on the same futures deal that Purcell signed.

As for Firkser, the tight end from Harvard signed with the Chiefs after being released by the New York Jets earlier in the 2017 season. Firkser signed to the Chiefs practice squad last December and stayed with the team through the offseason, at least until now. He looked solid in his final season at Harvard in 2016 with 45 catches and 7 touchdowns and at only 23, he should be able to find meaningful work after his release.
