What to make of the Chiefs’ schedule and Brett Veach’s comments
Schedule release day is a smorgasbord of junk food for starving NFL fans, and Brett Veach is cooking up some news of his own.
Nobody really knows much of anything about what the NFL is going to look like in 2018. In fact, the Chiefs are probably one of the most volatile teams in the league.
At the very least, they have one of the most volatile quarterbacks.
In reality, the schedule gives us very little new information. The Chiefs have a rough slate of matchups against the AFC North and NFC West, but so does the rest of the AFC West. The Chiefs draw the Jaguars and Patriots, because that’s what happens when you win your division. It’s more or less an even playing field for the AFC West, and while Patrick Mahomes and a retooled offense does get tested at the Chargers and at the Steelers to start the year, don’t fool yourself into thinking that the first four (or even six) weeks of the season will determine what the Chiefs will be by the end of the year. If the Chiefs can stay in the playoff mix, it will be Mahomes’ development that determines if the Chiefs can contend for the AFC – not the first few games of his sophomore year.
While the discussion around the schedule is mostly delicious, empty calories, Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach is auditioning for Iron Chef.
In his Friday press conference, Brett Veach acknowledged his aggressive tendencies in regards to the upcoming NFL Draft, doing nothing to slow rumors that Kansas City will be looking to trade up (presumably for some secondary help) late on Thursday or early on Friday night. Just a few minutes later, Veach discussed why it might be bad business to be too aggressive in the draft. This, of course, makes for wonderful mid-April conversation.
