KANSAS CITY, MO - AUGUST 31: Tight end Gavin Escobar

The Miami Dolphins are the latest team to try to find some offensive value in adding former Chiefs tight end Gavin Escobar.

One year ago at this time, Gavin Escobar was the exciting, under-the-radar find that would help boost the tight end role behind Travis Kelce for the Kansas City Chiefs. Twelve months later, he’s latched on with yet another team—this time, the Miami Dolphins—in hopes of finally finding a place to land for longer than a few months at a time.

The Chiefs signed Escobar to a one-year deal in free agency last year in the hopes that a classic change of scenery would work wonders for the former second round pick. Praised for his catching ability, Escobar was a big investment for the Dallas Cowboys in the 2013 NFL Draft as they hoped to find Jason Witten’s heir apparent and also add an intriguing target for two-TE sets on offense. Four years later, none of that had materialized, Witten was still going strong and Escobar was set free.

Enter the Chiefs, who thought Escobar could provide competition for Demetrius Harris (or even supplant him). Unfortunately for Escobar, the tight end was cut before the regular season as Harris and Ross Travis won the final two roster spots heading into the regular season.

From there, it’s been a ride around the NFL for Escobar. He tried out for the Carolina Panthers as well as the New York Jets. He finally landed a roster spot with John Dorsey once again, this time with the Cleveland Browns, but that was his shortest lived stint yet—three whole months. Now he’s landed a spot with the Miami Dolphins.

Escobar has 30 catches for 333 receiving yard and 8 touchdowns in his NFL career.
