Former Kansas City Chiefs tight end Gavin Escobar might find quick work if he’s able to latch on with the New York Jets after a workout on Monday.

Gavin Escobar is still searching for meaningful work for the 2017 regular season after being allowed to finish up his contract and leave the Dallas Cowboys. The veteran tight end played four seasons for Jerry Jones and company, but failed to live up to the draft standing as a former second round pick. Now the New York Jets are the latest to bring in Escobar and hope for positive results, especially in the passing game, per Peter Schrager.

Escobar is a recent cut from the Kansas City Chiefs, who signed Escobar earlier this spring. The Chiefs were potentially interested in reshaping the tight end position below Travis Kelce, an All-Pro, on the depth chart given that Ross Travis is all unproven potential and Demetrius Harris had a down season. The latter was the team’s No. 2 tight end and didn’t live up to expectations in 2016. He was plagued by a myriad of drops and an offseason arrest didn’t help for felony possession of marijuana. However Harris looks like a reformed man so far in the preseason and if he can solve any issues with his hands, he’s exactly the sort of large, athletic target that’s perfect for the end zone.

Escobar came into the league highly praised for his soft hands and catching ability. Even with a knock against him as a one-dimensional player who needed serious work as a blocker, he still warranted a second round selection because he was so good as an offensive weapon. Yet it’s clear he hasn’t put it all together, and maybe never will, given that the Chiefs stuck with Harris and Travis and let Escobar go at the deadline.
