The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that special teams coach Dave Toub has been promoted to add “Assistant Head Coach” to his nameplate.

The Kansas City Chiefs were fortunate enough to retain Dave Toub as their special teams coach once again after avoiding any other NFL franchises hiring him away to be their next head coach. However, rather than forcing him to simply go back to the position he had before, they’ve promoted him to assistant head coach, per reports.

Toub has made the Chiefs a fixture atop special teams rankings ever since he first arrived with head coach Andy Reid in 2013, coming over from the Chicago Bears after helping names like Devin Hester develop into game-changing talents.

With the Chiefs, special teams play has been excellent even as the personnel has changed over time. Most recently, the kicking game continued to be successful even through the forced transition from Cairo Santos to Harrison Butker after the former suffered a groin injury that forced him to miss the bulk of the regular season.

Toub has garnered head coaching consideration in recent seasons, even though the hiring of a special teams coach is such a rarity in the hiring process. John Harbaugh is one example as a success for the Baltimore Ravens, but most teams go for offensive and defensive coordinators or even recycled options of former head coaches (a la Jon Gruden for the Oakland Raiders this offseason).

The Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers both interviewed Dave Toub in 2016 for their respective job openings, but both teams went on to hire others for the role. This last year, Toub was once again considered to be a name called upon by teams needing new head coaches, but no official interview surfaced this year, at least that made its way to the press.

It’s likely that Toub’s new promotion is being made not only to reward a job well done but to also prep him for his next head coaching opportunity.
