Tre Boston spoke out about his frustrations as a free agent safety this offseason and gave a brief list of suitors who have showed interest so far.

Safeties are a vital position for the Kansas City Chiefs as long as they’re running Bob Sutton’s schemes on defense. The loss of Eric Berry for the season in the very first game last season set forth a domino run that resulted in frustrated players in over the heads as they tried to compensate.

One year later, the Chiefs are in the middle of completely remaking the secondary even as they hope Berry can bounce back completely from yet another season-ending injury. Ron Parker has been released. Steven Terrell is a free agent, and the team hasn’t made any public overtures toward him even as they’ve taken time to re-sign smaller free agents like Terrance Smith, Anthony Sherman and De’Anthony Thomas.

The trend continues at cornerback with the additions of Kendall Fuller and David Amerson and the exits of Phillip Gaines, Terrance Mitchell, Kenneth Acker, Darrelle Revis and, of course, Marcus Peters.

So let’s assume a best case scenario here: that Berry is as good as ever and he returns to solidify the strong safety spot. That still leaves Eric Murray and Dan Sorensen to back up both spots and/or work themselves into the starting role left open by Parker’s release. If Murray is good enough to take over, he didn’t completely show it last year and it would take some optimistic projections for the front office to feel solid about the state of things. That’s certainly a possibility.

However the free agent market is ripe right now with quite a bit of safety help: from Eric Reid to Tre Boston to Kenny Vaccaro and more (many more). Even Tyrann Mathieu hit the market and only garnered a one year deal worth $7 million—a pittance compared to any other offseason. With the salary cap going up each year, most are enjoying an increase in positional spending but that’s not true of safeties.

In a recent interview with Alex Marvez, Boston says he and the rest of his colleagues aren’t finding the same money as others, and he’s not quite sure why.

"“It’s kind of unbelievable to me,” he said. “We’re talking about a position that’s needed more and more on the field in today’s game. There are about five or six valuable starting safeties in free agency right now. But I guess it’s just trying to get us to take peanuts like the rest of them have. That’s just the business of the game.”"

Boston went on to identify the Cardinals, Raiders, Giants and Browns as the teams who have expressed interest in him. If that list is exhaustive that means the Chiefs didn’t even bother to ask about a 25-year-old coming off of a breakout season in a depressed market, financially speaking.

Should we read the tea leaves and believe that Murray is up to the task? Will the Chiefs go cheap at the position and draft a new starter because Berry is already so pricey on the opposite side? Are they waiting out the market to see when the ice breaks?

What do you think will happen, Chiefs Kingdom?
