The latest news concerning Benjamin Watson is that the veteran tight end recently took a visit with the New Orleans Saints.
One week ago, the Kansas City Chiefs were reportedly “working on a deal” with veteran tight end Benjamin Watson after he visited with the team’s coaches and staff at Arrowhead Stadium. After several days with no news, now he is apparently still taking further visits with at least one new team—the New Orleans Saints.
No matter which team he selects (or vice versa), Watson is bound to be a part of an exciting offensive machine. No one needs any introduction for Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara and company. As for the Chiefs, they will feature Sammy Watkins on offense alongside Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill and Kareem Hunt. Watson should fit in just fine with either team.
That said, it’s a bit surprising and disheartening that Watson hasn’t finalized a deal with the Chiefs already. Maybe he didn’t pass his physical or maybe both sides were not as far along as originally reported. Either way, the Chiefs are still left searching for potential help at tight end where they have Demetrius Harris and Orson Charles behind Kelce.
Watson had 61 catches for 522 receiving yards and four touchdowns last season at the age of 37. Watson remains a very productive player well into his late thirties, and there’s little reason to believe this will be the year his productivity takes a real hit.
