Carlton Davis – Auburn – 6’1″ – 203 pounds

Out of the cornerbacks on my wish list, the one that is probably least likely to still be on the board when the Chiefs pick is Auburn’s Carlton Davis. Davis is pretty much tailor-made for the Chiefs press man coverage. He is big enough and has long enough arms plus he likes to play physical. He’ll jam wideouts up at the line of scrimmage and while his 4.53 forty time isn’t blazing fast its enough to be competitive and he plays with good speed on tape. In fact, I was as impressed with his ability to run right with his man down the field as I was with his ability to jam them at the line.

In this clip you can see Davis get a quick jam at the line and then keep with his man down the field.

Sometimes Davis can get a little too physical with his opponent. While you have to be smart and not draw pass interference flags, I’d rather my press corners be a little overly physical than not physical enough. The clip below is walking that line between being physical and getting a flag. Watch him at the top of the screen.

Finally, Davis is equally physical in run support. His tape is full of plays like this.

I won’t be shocked if Davis ends up going in the late first round so I won’t hold my breath that he’ll still be on the board when the Chiefs pick in the second round but if he is available I think he’d be a fantastic pick and I wouldn’t even blame them if they moved up a few spots to get him if he starts to slide into the second round too far.
