One quick post on Twitter from former Steeler Mike Mitchell provides a likely summation of the complete lack of movement on the safety market.

News of player signings in the National Football League have been flying so fast over the last few days that it’s hard for the executives themselves to keep up. Free agency is always termed as a “frenzy” for good reason, but this year has seemed excessive in the amount of up front signings that were clearly already worked out well ahead of time.

What’s a bit surprising, however, is the relative lack of movement in the safety market. Safety is arguably as important as ever as a position, but several above average starting options remain available in free agency without even a hint of a visit.

Eric Reid is wondering whether or not it has to do with his social or political opinions. Tre Boston has to be scratching his head as well. Mike Mitchell might have just explained it all with a single tweet directed at one of his peers, Tyrann Mathieu:

Are the NFL’s safeties being forced to wait on Tyrann Mathieu to make up his mind on where to go? On Wednesday, the Arizona Cardinals shocked the NFL by announcing the release of the Honey Badger, and Mathieu immediately stated his intent to make a smart decision—not one just based on being the highest bidder. In response, a number of teams were rumored to be interested, including the Kansas City Chiefs.

If teams believe they have a realistic chance, even a small one, of winning the sweepstakes for Mathieu’s services, then Miller could be right. Maybe everyone is just waiting for one player to sign before the rest of the bricks can be laid into place. That seems a bit odd given that Mathieu isn’t quite the player he was even 2 years ago, before injuries took their toll on one of the single most dynamic players in the NFL.

For now, however it looks like Reid, Boston, Mitchell, Morgan Burnett, Kenny Vaccaro and more will wait their turn despite the fact that they’re just as deserving of being a part of the frenzy as anyone else.
