Sammy Watkins rumors: Cowboys, Chiefs listed among potential suitors
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs were one of several teams mentioned as a potential suitor for Sammy Watkins by NFL analyst Ian Rapoport.
At this point, it’s a longshot for the Kansas City Chiefs, but it’s nonetheless nice to see the franchise’s name reportedly in the mix for the services of free agent wide receiver Sammy Watkins.
Ian Rapoport recently appeared on NFL Network to break down the market for Watkins, the talented young wide receiver who unexpectedly hit free agency when the Los Angeles Rams decided to use the franchise tag Lamarcus Joyner instead. Among the potential suitors for Watkins’ services were the Rams themselves, who want him back, as well as the Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys.
"“Of course they are going to have some significant competition there. A lot of teams are interested in Sammy Watkins. The Kansas City Chiefs would be one. The Bears are another. The Jacksonville Jaguars if they lose out on Allen Robinson, they are another. There’s also the potential to talk about the Dallas Cowboys if they cannot get something done to get Dez Bryant back.”"
The Chiefs might have more holes on defense than offense these days, but the allure of adding a top flight wide receiver to stand opposite Tyreek Hill in the Chiefs shiny new offense is hard to pass up. Watkins would add another big play receiver who can go deep for new quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his cannon of an arm. Defenses would never be able to key in on any one player in an offense that also boasts Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce and the NFL’s leading rusher Kareem Hunt.

Then again, the Chiefs are going to have to do some serious work in order to convince Watkins to come and play for them given that so many other teams have exponentially more money at hand. That includes his current team, the L.A. Rams, who reportedly want him back despite allowing him to hit the market.
