Kansas City Chiefs aren’t connected with top wide receivers

The lack of rumors linked to the Chiefs is just that, but it might signal that Kansas City is not in on the top wide receivers on the market.

This week is called a free agent frenzy for a reason, but so far, the Kansas City Chiefs haven’t been connected to many players on the open market, especially at a perceived position of interest: wide receiver.

The latest round of rumors or at least educated guesses from Jason La Canfora circumvents the Chiefs entirely as he discusses the top-rated pass catchers on the market. As free agency begins on March 14 with the new league year (but legal tampering begins on Monday), teams will begin to really circle in on the players they are most interested in. So far, at least according to the digital water cooler, fans shouldn’t expect much in the way of a major WR addition.

La Canfora’s best guess for Allen Robinson, the Jaguars wideout who is now a free agent but coming off of an ACL injury, is the San Francisco 49ers (who have enough cap space to sign Kirk Cousins 3x over). Sammy Watkins is expected to re-sign with the L.A. Rams. Donte Moncrief is linked to the Baltimore Ravens and Jarvis Landry has already been traded.

Of course, none of this means the Chiefs aren’t in the very thick of it with a vault for a front office door. The Chiefs have certainly worked that way before, signing players on the open market like Mitchell Schwartz or Sean Smith without a hint of smoke to signal the move in advance. And Brett Veach did say at the NFL Combine that the Chiefs would be “in the market” for a wide receiver.

However, it’s also unclear whether Veach meant free agency or the NFL Draft. The Chiefs are also not mentioned in conjuction with Robinson or Watkins because the cap space the franchise has to work with pales in comparison to nearly every other team with the same need. There’s simply too much money to throw around these days, and players who have been waiting their entire lives for a chance at true wealth aren’t going to give much of a discount to a team they might be more interested in playing for.

Looking back, we’ll likely get a better look at what Veach meant by his quote, but at least current buzz in NFL circles doesn’t include the Chiefs at all at wide receiver.
