The Chiefs defense is getting younger (and I kinda like it)

Kansas City Chiefs fans should trust Brett Veach to piece together a new defense given the young, tough players he’s found so far.

I like what Brett Veach has done with this Kansas City Chiefs defense so far.

I know what you’re going to say. The Chiefs just traded Marcus Peters, so why the heck would I say that I like what they’re doing. Yadda yadda yadda.

Yes, I will agree with you that trading away Marcus Peters was a tough pill to swallow. Do I agree with that move? Absolutely not. Marcus Peters will be a Hall of Fame player one day, whether he’s kneeling for the national anthem or not. However, I am someone who loves young talent. A player who just messes people up on the defensive side. Someone who will beat you with speed and toughness on every down. That’s why I love the approach of going young.

Reggie Ragland is a great example of the type of player I’m describing. Not afraid to hit, not afraid to get down and dirty and not afraid to make the big play when a big play is needed.

Sign me up for that kind of defense.

Ragland played that way for the University of Alabama. The SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2015, he led his defense and his team to a national title. Maybe it’s time he led a defense to the Super Bowl.

Last year’s defense was soft. I will be the first person to come out and say that. Losing Eric Berry, the toughest player on the team, definitely did not do them any favors on that side of the ball. But what happened to the defense that balled out for the first few games of the season?

I will tell you what happened.

They lost the willingness to get down and dirty, the will to win the game. Go ahead and ask Patrick Mahomes, he played for a Texas Tech team that had the worst defense in college football. You can’t win flinging it every play.

I want to suggest to Chiefs fans everywhere to support where Brett Veach is going with the defense right now. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Because you never know when he’s gonna go out and find another Reggie Ragland or another trade for a young and talented corner.

Veach is bold, and I like that about him. I trust him to find more players with speed, with athleticism, and with the desire to win.

Let’s get this defense back to where it needs to be.
