General manager Brett Veach took to the podium to speak to reporters to open the media session on Thursday at the 2018 NFL Combine.

Kansas City Chiefs general manger Brett Veach was the first person up to speak to reporters on Thursday morning at the 2018 NFL Combine in Indianapolis, and he immediately made it clear that the media likely wouldn’t get what they wanted most: comments on the mega-deals recently made by Veach in the last month.

Until the new league year begins, reporters cannot comment on deals that are still pending due to the NFL’s offseason calendar. Already agreed-upon trades like Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins and Marcus Peters to the L.A. Rams are not yet official, which means Veach cannot speak openly about them in any detail.

Veach did, however, address a number of other subjects in the few minutes he was at the microphone. He had very high praise for his new starting quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, saying, “He’s one of the best players I’ve ever seen.”

That statement alone should thrill Chiefs Kingdom who are licking their wounds from losing such significant talent this offseason so far. The Chiefs still have some percentage of the fan base who believe they did wrong by trading away Alex Smith and the loss of Peters was tough for everyone to stomach, even with the return of promising corner Kendall Fuller. When you add in the loss of linebacker Derrick Johnson, it’s been an offseason of serious change before the Combine even arrived.

In other comments on Thursday, Veach was asked about the recent acquisition of cornerback David Amerson, the status of injured linebacker Dee Ford, the offensive weapons they want to provide Patrick Mahomes with and whether or not the Chiefs would be bringing back wide receiver Albert Wilson.
