NFL mock draft: Kansas City Chiefs go heavy on defense in Day 2
By Matt Conner
No. 86. DeShon Elliott, S, Texas
Size: 6’2, 210 lbs.
DeShon Elliot is an interesting player at a key position for the Chiefs. Considering the team could decide to part ways with Ron Parker as well as Daniel Sorensen and the fact that Eric Berry is coming back from yet another season-ending injury, the Chiefs just need serious talent and insurance at a position that has been a strength for years.
Elliott would definitely be the best young prospect among the bunch that also includes Eric Murray and, if they re-sign him, Steven Terrell. Elliott had 6 interceptions last year for Texas and the stat sheet pops in his single year as a starter for the Longhorns. He’s a willing tackler who was forced to play all over, so he’s got some versatility as he enters the NFL.
That said, most of his interceptions were pretty opportunistic (e.g. he happened to be near the tipped pass). That says a lot about his ability to upset and be engaged in the middle of the play but it also means he’s not quite the turnover machine you might expect when reading the stat lines. That said, he’s a nice well-rounded player who is very physical and could end up as a very good pro.
