Vontae Davis should draw free agent interest after getting medical clearance

Former Indianapolis Colts cornerback Vontae Davis has been medically cleared after injuring his core, and the free agent should draw considerable interest.
The market of available players just got a bit more interesting on Monday with word that former Indianapolis Colts cornerback Vontae Davis was medically cleared for physical activity after having surgery to repair a core injury suffered earlier in the year.
Davis has been with the Colts since 2012 when a trade by Ryan Grigson brought him over from the Miami Dolphins. It was one of Grigson’s few positive moves for the Colts since Davis ended up starting 76 games for the Colts after the trade, providing a strong presence in the secondary for a team that sorely needed one.
This last season, however, Davis was a shell of his former self playing only five games on the year with 2 passes defended to his credit. He played through a core muscle injury, which ultimately forced the Colts to remove him from the active roster. Yet instead of placing him on injured reserve, both sides had gotten so bitter, the Colts decided to release him instead. All along, the team said Davis was healthy and just not playing well. Davis, on the other hand, blamed the injury.
On Monday, Davis finally got the medical all-clear in order to move forward again, per Adam Schefter. saf
Earlier this year, Bob Kravitz, a Colts beat reporter, got word from Davis that he was ready to make a change, so it’s highly unlikely that Davis will return to Indy. Instead he is now a free agent, able to sign with any team without waiting for the new league year. For teams wanting cornerback help, landing Davis could be a nice head start for a talent who will be trying to prove his worth once again after a down season.
For a team like the Chiefs, a player like Davis is actually the perfect sort of free agent target, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone if general manager Brett Veach at least kicks the tires on this one. Davis is experienced with solid numbers and plays a very physical role at corner. Coming off of an injury plagued season, Davis should be willing to take lower pay on a prove-it deal to show what he could do. In other words, it’s an ideal flyer for Veach to take.
The Chiefs have already started their cornerback makeover after releasing Darrelle Revis and acquiring Kendall Fuller from Washington. In addition, Terrance Mitchell, Phillip Gaines and Kenneth Acker are all free agents to be.
Davis will turn 30-years-old in late May.
