Kansas City Chiefs team president Mark Donovan said that fans shouldn’t expect any changes to jerseys or uniforms any time in the near future.
To hear Mark Donovan discuss the Kansas City Chiefs uniforms, it’s clear he feels some pressure from the outside. As team president, Donovan spoke to reporters about a number of subjects during the media week, including whether or not the new season would bring any changes to the team’s uniforms or jerseys. The answer, which most of Chiefs Kingdom will be glad to hear, is no.
The Chiefs are a franchise that has stuck with their same look for quite some time. History and tradition are important considerations when it comes to such changes to a team’s look. Yet it’s clear listening to Donovan that the team has been approached before about potential changes. In fact, he expects such a meeting with Nike:
"“I’m sure Nike will come for us at the league meetings and say we should do something crazy. If history holds true with the Hunt family, I’m not going to see any changes, nor would I argue for them by the way. I think one of the things that make our brand equity not unique, but valuable, is that we’re one of the very few that stick to that tradition and honor that tradition.”"
Over the last couple decades, the Chiefs have only made very minor changes to their uniforms. Ten years ago, the team added a special Lamar Hunt patch. After the unfortunate passing of Derrick Thomas, the team added a special sticker with his uniform number. An American flag decal was added after the terrorist attacks, and a 40th anniversary patch was also added during the 2002 season.
What do you think, Chiefs Kingdom? Would you welcome a “crazy” change to the uniform? Do you appreciate the tradition? Sound off in the comments below!
