Remembering Alex Smith’s 5 greatest games with Kansas City Chiefs
No. 2 – January 4, 2014 @ Indianapolis Colts
No Chiefs fan wants to remember this painful game, but this was Alex Smith’s best statistical game in red and gold. Smith’s stat line was monstrous: 30 completions on 46 attempts for 378 passing yards, 4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. Smith also added an impressive 57 rushing yards on the ground.
All the more impressive was the fact that Alex managed all of this after losing feature back Jamaal Charles early in the 1st quarter. Smith was working with a motley crew of pass catchers and a second strong running back, and still managed to put up 44 points in the postseason. Alex showed Chiefs Kingdom that he was capable of putting the team on his back and leading the offense, even without the legendary Charles available to carry the load.
As the game went on, the Chiefs injury list grew and, ultimately, it would lead to the Colts comeback. Doubters may point to the failed sideline catch by Dwayne Bowe to say Alex didn’t make the throw that mattered, but the truth is the ball was catchable. An injured Bowe simply failed to get his feet down in bounds. Many Chiefs fans do their best to block this painful game from memory, and rightfully so, but it would be a mistake to forget such a stellar performance from Alex Smith. [Thomas Welte]
