Remembering Alex Smith’s 5 greatest games with Kansas City Chiefs
No. 4 – November 27, 2016 @ Denver Broncos
When I think about Alex Smith’s greatest moments as a Kansas City Chief, the epic comeback on a Sunday night in Denver comes to mind. Smith was bad for three quarters. He didn’t turn the ball over, but he’d managed to generate close to nothing on offense. Then, the 4th quarter happened. After K.C.’s defense allowed an 80-yard TD and with the team trailing by 8, most Chiefs fans, including myself, had accepted that this one was over. Smith, however, had other plans.
The Chiefs got the ball back with three minutes remaining. Smith moved the offense all the way down to the 14-yard line, converting on a 4th down along the way. Three incomplete passes brings up 4th & 10, and the next play may be the best of Smith’s season.
This is such a clutch play from Smith. The free blitzer comes screaming around the left side, right in Smith’s face. To hang in there and throw a strike to Tyreek Hill is impressive. Smith would then hit Hill for six and Demetrius Harris for the two-point conversion to tie the game.
The teams would exchange field goals to start OT. After a long miss by Brandon McManus, Smith throws a beautiful pair of completions to Hill and Travis Kelce, putting the team in range for Cairo Santos’s game-winning field goal. Smith was so clutch in that game, it instilled in this team, and myself as a fan, the belief that Alex Smith had the ability to deliver through any sort of adversity. This game will forever live as one of my favorite moments as a Chiefs fan.
Alex Smith will be remembered as one of the most polarizing men to wear a Chiefs uniform, and that is okay. What I do hope we all remember is how much fun the last five years have been. I, for one, will be forever grateful to Alex Smith for the time he served as quarterback of Kansas City Chiefs. [Austin Owen]
