The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t getting much respect in the way of Super Bowl hopes from early bettors for next year’s big game.

The switch from Alex Smith to Patrick Mahomes means very little in the eyes of those focused on the bigger picture of the National Football League. Just like any year, the Kansas City Chiefs linger in the middle of the pack when it comes to preseason Super Bowl odds for next year’s big game, per Sports Illustrated.

The fact that the Chiefs are below several teams is not surprising. After all, they bowed out of the playoffs with another total meltdown, allowing the Tennessee Titans, who run the most predictable offense ever, to run all over them in the second half and chip away at an 18-point deficit. The Chiefs have a single lone win in the playoffs during Andy Reid’s tenure, so there’s no real reason for bettors to believe at this stage.

However, the Chiefs have made seismic changes already given that they’ve dealt Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins. They’ve handed the leadership mantle and quarterback reins to Patrick Mahomes, an unknown quantity who could provide the spark needed to make the leap. He could also be an overwhelmed first year starter.

Perhaps the wild card there as well as other roster holes or concerns is why the Chiefs are buried behind several other AFC teams. In fact, they’re tied or behind two others in their own division despite winning the West for two straight seasons. The Oakland Raiders are 21/1 odds. The L.A. Chargers and Chiefs are both tied at 30/1. Only the Broncos are worse at 35/1.

Others in the way of the Chiefs include the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans. You can see the complete results here.
