On today’s Blitz Package podcast, the Kansas City Chiefs need to fix some issues on defense to get back to the top in 2018.

The first few years of head coach Andy Reid and defensive coordinator Bob Sutton being in Kansas City was when the defense was at it’s best in their time. All three years from 2013-2015, the defense was in the top five of points allowed. That has gone down the last couple years along with where they rank in individual stats along the defense.

There are many parts of the defense that will need upgrading along the defensive side of the ball if they want Sutton’s scheme to work again. It can be done, but it will take a lot of money in free agency if they want to get back to the top five next season. One of those areas is the cornerback position where there are some names that might hit free agency who could help the Chiefs immediately.

The Chiefs will need the defense to improve if they want to help their rookie quarterback in his first year leading the team. There will be mistakes made and be adjusting for young Patrick Mahomes. If they want to make it easier for the former Texas Tech quarterback, they will need to spend some money on the other side of the ball this time.

Is it possible that Chiefs fans have grown comfortable with mediocrity? Fans are terrified about what could happen if there were specific changes to the organization, some about if Sutton was let go. This is a good time to talk about why fans shouldn’t be afraid of change going into 2018.

Quarterback Alex Smith most likely has spent his last year in Kansas City. There are all sorts of rumors on where he might land including spots like the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, and even Minnesota Vikings. Where is the best spot that he can land and have the most success?
